When I teach the food chain, I do it within context of a biome. For example, I teach a Polar Food Chain or a Rainforest Food chain.
There is an example of the Polar Food Chain in a lesson on this site. I have students make a paper chain to show what each animal eats. This is too difficult for kindergarten. You may want to make felt animals or use three dimensional figures to demonstrate the food chain.
