When I teach the food chain, I do it within context of a biome. For example, I teach a Polar Food Chain or a Rainforest Food chain.
There is an example of the Polar Food Chain in a lesson on this site. I have students make a paper chain to show what each animal eats. This is too difficult for kindergarten. You may want to make felt animals or use three dimensional figures to demonstrate the food chain.

You could create a food chain poster. You could create animals out of felt, then have the children sequence them in order on a felt chain, after you model it. You could also read "I Know and Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" and ask if that is a normal food chain and why not. Another good book is "The House that Jack Built".
