The teacher of ELL learners, what are the qualties and characteristics of the teacher

by Jackie Blackwell on Oct 03 2009 11:34 PM

I am a doctoral student preparing my dissertation on the ELL learner and the "qualities" of the teacher of these students. Any suggestions that you might have as I prepare my bibliography would be welcomed! Thanks bunches!

I am Jackie Blackwell.

Jackie, I also have a doctoral degree. I would say in addition to patience, you need to be a very flexible person, have a good sense of humor and be someone who always puts his/her students first. You also need to be a very organized, detail oriented person.

Congrats on being at the dissertation phase. I would say that understanding one's own cultural background is of great importance for ESL/Bilingual teachers. I recommend Deculturalization and the Struggle for Equality--A Brief History of Dominated Cultures the United States by Joel Spring. As teachers we love students and teaching but, why are we in this field? I believe it is to bring social justice to a marginalized group of people. Anyway I hope this helps.
