Making AYP for ELLs NYS ELA Reading

by Sandy on Sep 29 2009 7:53 PM

My principal is holding me accountable because the ELLs in my school didnt make AYP in the ELA. I am a pullout teacher, with 60 kids for grades 3-5. Some of them just came with little or know schooling. After 1 year in NY they must now take the ELA. They also want me to teach all content subjects in a pullout program. I dont know what to do first. I am pressurred and I dont know if I can or want to handle all of this pressure. I am doing this for 15 years. It is all about data now, not the kids. I am thinking of packing it in - any advice?

How can they hold YOU accountable when it is the responsibility of EVERYONE to support these kids? Your principal is wrong to hold you accountable when you only see them on a pull-out (I'm assuming) basis. I'm not sure what advice to give you, but I wouldn't want to teach at your school if your principal doesn't see the ELLs as everyone's responsibility. Unless you have the support of others in your district, it may be very difficult to convince your principal that this responsibility is not yours alone. Good luck in whatever you decide.

well, we are all working on it since my last post. They have brought in someone to help me pick new materials etc. work on the grouping etc. They want more content areas, themes etc. they want groups wiht mixed levels of proficienies so that the children can learn from each other. There is no end to the paperwork as well in NYC. Cant wait to retire!!! A few more years!!!
