Pull Out ELL Help

by Sara on Sep 07 2009 10:45 PM

This is my first year pulling ELLs. I have used their language tests, reading scores, and state tests to group my students who are in grades 3-5. We've done some "get to know you" games and discussion about their other language/culture. Now I'm wondering where to start. I plan to implement curiculum since I am pulling same grade levels at the same time, however, it's been hard to pin the teachers down for materials/lesson plans to guide me. I'm wondering where other pull-out teachers get their materials or how they guide their instruction? Do you have a checklist you follow? I was a classroom teacher for 6 years so my first instinct is to do guided reading and incorporate writing and vocab from there.

I also teach varied levels of grade 3-5. We use a blend of pullout and push in. For level 1 students shared reading is a great option to work on expressive as well as receptive skills. You are right on track with guided reading for Access level 2 and up. I usually extend guided reading to 30 minutes which gives time for extended preview/scaffolding. I always incorporate a writing piece (graphic organizer, prompt response or ticket out the door) in the session. This way you are on the instructional level and it requires some minor co-planning with your co teachers. You also cover all the Domains (L,S, R, W).
