Preschool ESL instruction

I would appreciate suggestions, materials, and ideas concerning ESL instruction for a four-year old preschool student at the newcomer level. This student would most likely be the only ELL in his class. How interactive are students at this level? Could anyone recommend some good reference materials for ESL instruction at the preschoollevel? Thanks for your help!

Hello E.Haiba,
I don't live in Egypt, but would be interested to know what are the requirements in Egypt to do this job(teaching English to Egyptian 3year olds)? Do you need a specific diploma for that? Do you have to know the Arabic language as well, or only English?
If you wish, please answer to my emailadress.
Thanks alot,

Re: Re: Re: Re: preschool ESL instruction
I am a Pre-School Teacher, and have been working with Pre-Shool aged children since the early 1970's. I have found that young children will use drama on their own, if you provide them wiyh a box of 'Dress-Up' clothes. Other things that work are providing children with clothing for a particular theme, and they will dress up and act out things from the theme. Also, instead of clothing, stick or hand puppets often work well in involving young children with drama. Sometimes, spontaneously, kids may dramatize a story you have read earlier, when they are playing together later in the day. I hope the ideas I have shared here will prove helpful to you.

I am going to China to visit my parents in a few days. My sister-in-law asked me to bring some ESL resource books for chinese elementary children. Since she asked me the last minute, I went on the WEB and had a difficult time making my selection. Any proven curriculum you would recommend? Thank you very much!
[ Reply ]
Re: Re: Re: Preschool and K-6 ESL instruction
The ESL resource materials would have to be ordered and you don't have time for that. I would take very simple picture books with only a sentence of text to a page. Remember these children are not ESL learners, they are EFL students. It is not the same thing at all. The students in China are learning a foreign language. They spend the rest of their day working in Chinese. So the text must be very short. I would suggest books naming colors, numbers, food, clothing, animals, etc.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Preschool and K-6 ESL instruction
I don't think you can use pair or small group activities with kindergarten kids with academic work. However, you can have centers: Blocks, Dress-up, art, science, painting, computer, etc. and put 3-4 students in each center. When most of the kids are occupied, you can work with a small group of students on pre-reading activities.

I'm not sure my email address appears in the message anywhere and I just realized I forgot to leave it. I am particularly interested in how best to organize and conduct 40 minute classes of children between the ages of 3 and 6. Any games and activity ideas would be most helpful and some information on how to present the same in the context of a reading class. I was hired to teach them reading and am given one new book each month for each level of class. That is about 8 or 9 classes a month. So just reading the book with them and drilling them on the vocabulary/spelling barely covered the time provided in the first two of the 8 classes this month...so, by the next class, I am going to have to have some games and activities related to the material from the book or it is going to be a real drag for them. I am 46 years old and generally considered a pretty serious guy... but I am more than willing to try and be fun....kids like me for some reason that escapes me haha but I NEED HELP

HI- I just started teaching 3-6 year olds myself. I have found that puppets, movements, songs and games are most helpful. I also try and have as much hands on material as possible. You can make puppets out of old socks and papper and string if you need to. I don't know if it is an option for the school to purchase nice ones for you. (they last a bit longer with the little ones wanting to touch adn hold them.) Hope those few ideas help. If anyone else has any I would love to hear about them. Sherri

Hi Louise. I know your message is very old, but I see lots of more recent questions for you, and in the hopes that I'm not overloading you with more questions, could you please send me some handy websites or basic places to look for resources and ideas. I only teach a preschool class that comes to me once a week, so I consider it just a one day immersion, really. But they're three, and I'm having a bit of a tough time.
If you're sick of people like me, please ignore all this. Hate to think I'm just causing more pain on top of my own!

Hi Buket
Try www.daveseslcafe.com for ideas, but it's always good to have a textbook that serves as a core to your lessons. You can always build on the theme of each chapter, using Dave's website for ideas.
Depending on the age of your daughter, you might consider the SBS series of textbooks, as well as New Interchange, if either of them are available were you are.
Good luck.

I would be very appreciative of any help for teaching 3-6year olds in China. I have some ideas but not sure how a class would run. Is there anywhere I can see an example of a lesson plan for such a class or maybe just an idea of how it should go? I know young kids have very short attention spans. So I assume that a class of say an hour has to be broken down into smaller parts with a lot of games and activities. How does one get illiterate, non-English speakers to perform the activities? Themes and websites, etc. would be very much appreciated.

I'd be interested in your suggestions for teaching preschoolers. Specifically, how do you handle the kids who don't want to be there and distract the others?
Thank you!
[ Reply ]
Re: Re: Re: preschool ESL instruction
Ignore them. As long as they aren't physically disrupting the class, leave them and concentrate on the kids who are paying attention to you. Eventually they'll see the others having fun and start to wonder why.
I used to totally stress out with the 2-3yr olds, until someone told me to do this. I tried it, my classes were pretty crazy for a few lessons, with maybe half paying attention at any one time, but then it started getting better. And I became more fun for the kids, since I wasn't worrying about the one kid who insisted on walking away and being dragged back. I could play!

Re: Re: preschool ESL instruction
I am teaching Vietnamese children in a small preschool in Hanoi and I am constantly pressured by parents to produce results. Thanks to parent demand (and the influence from English language colleges) we have changed our immersion acquistion program to a language learning program; this switch seems comfortable for the time being since it gives us something tangible to focus on (otherwise we feel like we are sinking). I am a qualified ECC teacher who has 5 years ESL experience at international schools. But increasingly parents are coming in and announcing that other preschools and language centres are producing English fluency - a position they hold even when challenged. They are shifting their kids out of our preschool and into these environments. I am beginning to feel stuck and unable to sort out what is really happening. If these preschools and colleges are producing these kinds of results, what the heck am I doing wrong?

Good morning,
I'm not sure if you are able to help me. I am a virant 53 year old ready to be laid-off again. I was married to a very nice chinese gentleman and am thinking of returning to Hong Kong. I did not finish college, but was hoping that I might be able to teach english to kindergarten children. Is this possible for someone my age to find a position? Please be as honest as you can.
Thanks,
Tiger

I plan to have a lot of different things to do to keep her happy and learning but I really don't know what to expect. How long should her class be? The mother wanted me to teach for 2 hours straight. Is this a good amount of time or too long?

Hello Louise,
i read your comment regarding the teaching of a foeign language and would appreciate any information concerning how to begin teaching english as a FOREIGN language. i am to start with preschoolers whose sole language is Hebrew. i would like to use ONLY english, but am puzzled as to how it should be done. you mentioned websites where materials could be found, but most of the things i saw concern english as a second language and it's different when you teach a language which has a status of a foreign language. i would appreciate any help or info regarding teaching materials which could be obtained.
Many Thanks,
Nave'

Re: Preschool ESL instruction
I've been reading these messages with interest, having been there myself. To new teachers of Pre-K ESL, I would say "Total Physical Response"! Keep them physically active in ways that reinforce the lesson; ie, make letter shapes with the hands or body when learning the ABCs, run around the room greeting each other to practice greetings, mimic animals. And don't use ANY of their native language!! If it's too complex to teach by action or example, it's probably too hard for the age group anyways.
Games - Karuta (slap the card that's called) for objects, letters, even phonics (do running Karuta for older or more active kids). UFO game: put cards on the floor and have the kids toss a small frisbee or coffee can lid, and say the cards under the lid. Red light/green light, using any opposite word pairs. Gesture game, Pictionary game, etc. Anything you enjoyed doing when you were a squirt will work.
I also use a few texts, like the "Let's Go!" series for slightly older kids, and make my own cards on the PC using free clipart (or free draw them-the kids don't care if you aren't Picasso, or even if you are). Give the printout to the kids and let them make their own cards by gluing it onto old food/cereal boxes (the thin kind) so they can practice at home with their family. If you have the time, record Q&A and cards on a cassette and dub it for the kids -- they'll memorize half the stuff at home in a week! Put some simple songs on the tape.
Let me know if I can help any of you...

Re: Re: Preschool ESL instruction
Hi Japanat! I'm generally alright with the techniques for teaching small children, but I'm finding myself at a loss for what to do with my faster finishers. I would like to give them a box or corner with a variety of games and activities for self-study that they can do themselves when they've finished with the whole class activity. However, I don't know what kind of activities will both be easy enough for them to do without a lot of supervision, but won't be so compelling that they are liable to abandon their classwork for it. Any suggestions?
